Independent patient fitting (IPF): Examples and Instructions

NOTE: for all images and videos, no face shall be shown

Instruct the patient to stand straight, comfortably. Take 2 pictures, front and side. Keep the head of the patient out of the frame.

Exam tips:

  1. Is Anchor fore-aft placement close to neutral?
  2. Is the cover on? 
  3. Is the length/height of the prosthesis proper?

 
 

Place a chair 4 meters away from the door. The patient initially sits in the chair. Instruct the patient to

  1. stand up, circle the chair from the right,
  2. circle the chair from the left,
  3. sit down, stand up, and walk towards the door,
  4. Open the door, close the door, and walk backward 3 steps.

The cameraman stands between the chair and the door next to the path and follows the patient only by rotating the camera.

Exam tips:

  1. Is the patient loading both feet and leaning forward during sit-to-stand transitions?
  2. Did the patient walk with no kicking action?
  3. Did the patient handle turns easily and comfortably?
  4. Did the patient handles the maneuvers properly?
 
 

Instruct the patient to carry a big (empty) carton box, walk 5 steps to the trunk of the car, put the box in the trunk, walk around and get in to the car, close the door, get out and stand up.

Exam tips:

  1. Can patient walk confidently while carrying a big object?
  2. Can patient get in and out of the car smoothly?
 
 

Ascent: from the side if possible, otherwise from the back with an angle; Descent: from the side if possible, otherwise form the front with an angle.

If it is impossible for the patient to ascend the stairs using an alternating pattern, disable stair ascent mode from the app, and record the preferred pattern of the patient.

Exam tips:

  1. Can the patient trigger stair ascent consistently?
  2. Is the patient putting whole foot on the step and leaning forward when ascending stairs?
  3. Is the patient using handrails?
  4. Is the foot placement proper when descending stairs?
  5. Does the patient have proper posture when descending stairs

 
 

Make a video for ramp ascent and descent (continues motion) from the side if possible otherwise from the front with an angle.

Exam tips:

  1. Is the patient walking up the ramp with no kicking action?
  2. Is the step length equal?
  3. Does the patient using proper rollover/riding technique?

 
 

Repeat the actions in the training video (kneel, get onto the floor, pivot and stand up).

Exam tips:

  1. Is the patient using proper technique to kneel (no rollover)?
  2. Can the patient conformably get onto the floor and standup?

 
 

Video from the side, get onto the bicycle and pedal 5 times and get off from the bicycle and walk 2 steps.

Exam tips:

  1. Is the patient using the correct technique to get on and off the bike?
